Contemporary dance is a compilation of different styles of dance, including lyrical, classical ballet and modern dance. Contemporary dance is not so much a specific dance technique as it is a compilation of different techniques based from modern dance.

Contemporary dance involves integrating the mind, body and spirit connection with the dance movements. Often a contemporary dancer will dance barefoot. There is a huge emotional connection to this style of dance . There is also a lot of floor work involved. Unlike in classical ballet which includes much more stricter, more beautiful lines, the contemporary dancer will use gravity to pull them down closer to the level of the floor.

It is also important to note that a lot of improvisational skills are used in a contemporary dance form. Improvisation means that the dancer uses whatever they feel at that moment to express the mood of the dance piece itself.
